About The Hospice and How We Care
Recognising that life is precious, at the Martlets Hospice we aim to ensure all those in our care enjoy the best possible lives, right up until the end.
We care for adults aged 18 and over who live in and around Brighton and Hove and are affected by terminal and life-limiting illnesses. Most of our patients are dying from cancer, but we also treat people with other chronic long-term conditions such as heart disease and neurological conditions.
Since the Martlets Hospice opened in 1997, we have helped more than 20,000 people. And it’s not only the patients themselves that we care for. We also offer long-term support for their families and carers to help them overcome difficult times.
We are a registered charity and are not part of the NHS. All our services are provided free of charge. We must raise over £3.4 million per year to help people who are dying to do so with dignity and in as calm and peaceful a way as possible.
This cannot be achieved without the ongoing support of the local community, so please help us to continue to ensure our patients enjoy a better life – and death.

Would you like to make a positive difference to the lives of others in the local community?
Volunteering for the Martlets is a fun and rewarding experience; you’ll get personal satisfaction and make new friends, not to mention the new skills that you’ll learn along the way. Many volunteers have discovered that volunteering can also help them back to work. You might be surprised to learn that at the Martlets volunteers make up the majority of the Hospice work force. In fact, the Martlets has over 550 registered volunteers who support the work of the professional staff.
Volunteers play an essential part of the life of the Martlets. Not just in the Hospice in Hove working alongside staff and patients, but also in our six charity shops, our furniture warehouse, EBay and on-line book sales as well as helping at our many diverse events.
We could not continue to offer our vital services to the people of Brighton and Hove and the Havens without the commitment and generosity of our volunteers.
There are both flexible and regular volunteering opportunities available, so to find out more about volunteering at the Hospice please contact our Voluntary Services Team on 01273 273400 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
We really would love to hear from you!
